It’s almost that time of year again! The leaves are starting to fall, and the Rocky River Street Division is getting ready for our 2026 Leaf Collection Season!
Our crews are still working hard to complete milling, grinding, asphalt, and concrete projects while the weather allows. We want to take advantage of the remaining good weather before transitioning our equipment and staff into leaf collection operations.
We want to share our schedule, explain how our collection process works, and provide some important reminders to help make this a successful season for everyone.
2026 LEAF COLLECTION SCHEDULE
Week of October 26: Our crews will begin transitioning trucks and equipment over to leaf collection operations.
Thursday, October 29 & Friday, October 30: We will conduct equipment checks and test runs to make sure our trucks, routes, operations, and staff are ready. These are preparation days, not the official start of collection.
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2 — OFFICIAL START DATE!
Leaf collection will become our primary seasonal operation while we continue responding to emergency repairs and other essential city services.
HOW DOES LEAF COLLECTION WORK?
There is NO NEED to call in your leaves!
Our crews will begin on the north side of Rocky River and work south toward the city limits.
Our goal is to make a complete pass through the city each week, weather, equipment, and leaf volume permitting.
OUR FIVE COLLECTION SECTIONS
Section 1: North of Lake Road
Section 2: Lake Road to Detroit Road
Section 3: Detroit Road to Hilliard Boulevard
Section 4: Hilliard Boulevard to Center Ridge Road
Section 5: Center Ridge Road south to the city limits
WHY DO WE WORK NORTH TO SOUTH?
The answer is simple: organization, consistency, and efficiency.
By following the same rotation, our crews can work through the city without constantly moving trucks and equipment between neighborhoods.
This allows us to track our progress, reduce unnecessary travel, and provide more consistent service to residents.
Once Section 5 is completed, we return to Section 1 and begin the rotation again.
Every neighborhood is important, and following an organized route helps us serve the entire community as efficiently and fairly as possible.
HOW RESIDENTS CAN HELP
Leaf Placement: Please place loose leaves on the tree lawn near the curb. Keep leaves out of the roadway, sidewalks, and storm drains.
No Sticks or Debris: Please keep branches, sticks, rocks, grass clippings, pumpkins, trash, and other yard waste out of leaf piles. These materials can damage equipment and cause delays.
PARKED VEHICLES — PLEASE READ!
One of the biggest ways residents can help our crews is by keeping vehicles away from leaf piles.
Our crews will NOT attempt to collect leaves around or between parked vehicles.
This is a safety precaution to prevent accidental damage to parked vehicles, protect our employees, and avoid damage to our collection equipment.
Our trucks and vacuum equipment require adequate space to operate safely. Even when a pile appears accessible, operating equipment too close to a parked vehicle creates unnecessary risks.
We strongly encourage residents to park in their driveways whenever possible during collection.
If you have family members, visitors, or neighbors who park along the street, please help us spread the word.
If a vehicle is blocking access to your leaf pile, our crews will move forward and your leaves will be collected during the next scheduled pass once the vehicle is moved.
No Bagged Leaves: Our vacuum equipment is designed to collect loose leaves. Please do not mix bagged leaves into collection piles.
Safety: Please keep children and pets away from operating equipment and give our crews room to work safely.
ADDITIONAL REMINDERS
Please help our crews by following these simple guidelines:
* Do not park on leaf piles. Dry leaves near hot vehicle components can create a fire hazard.
* Keep piles clear of obstacles. Avoid placing leaves around fire hydrants, mailboxes, utility poles, trees, and other objects that interfere with equipment.
* Keep leaves out of the street. Leaves in the roadway can create slippery conditions and block drainage.
* Avoid oversized or tightly packed piles. Spread leaves in manageable rows along the tree lawn whenever possible so our vacuum equipment can collect them efficiently.
* Be patient during weather delays. If rain, equipment issues, or other circumstances interrupt collection, crews will resume where they left off as conditions allow.
WHAT IF MY LEAVES ARE MISSED?
If our crews cannot collect your leaves because of parked vehicles, sticks, branches, or other obstructions, a notice will be left at your property explaining why.
Once the issue has been corrected, your leaves will be collected during our next scheduled pass through your section.
If you place leaves out after our crews have already passed your home, they will also be collected during the next rotation.
To keep the entire operation moving, our crews will not backtrack for individual homes or special pickup requests.
We understand this may be frustrating at times, but stopping and returning to individual properties delays service for other residents throughout the city.
OUR GOAL IS WEEKLY COLLECTION
Our goal is to work through all five sections each week. However, heavy leaf volume, rain, wet leaves, equipment breakdowns, parked vehicles, and other unexpected circumstances can affect our progress.
Some sections may take more than one day to complete, especially during peak leaf season.
We will make every effort to stay on schedule, but weekly collection is a goal, not a guarantee.
DAILY UPDATES
We will communicate every morning to let residents know which sections and areas our crews will be working in.
Updates will be shared through the city’s official communication channels.
If weather or equipment issues cause delays, we will do our best to keep everyone informed.
We encourage residents to follow these updates rather than calling in individual pickup requests.
END OF SEASON
Our final collection date will be announced as the season progresses. Please take advantage of the regular collection passes and avoid waiting until the end of the season to place your leaves out.
A MESSAGE FROM THE ROCKY RIVER STREET DIVISION
As Street Division Supervisor, I want our residents to know how much pride our crews take in serving this community.
Whether we’re repairing roads, pouring concrete, maintaining our streets, collecting leaves, or preparing for winter snow operations, our goal remains the same: to provide the best possible service to the residents of Rocky River.
Leaf collection is a large operation that requires planning, teamwork, equipment, and cooperation from everyone.
We understand residents want their leaves picked up as quickly as possible. Our crews will be working hard every day to make that happen while keeping the entire operation moving forward.
Our crews follow an organized collection schedule to ensure every neighborhood receives service. We appreciate your patience as we work through each section of the city.
Something as simple as moving a vehicle, keeping sticks out of a leaf pile, or having your leaves ready when crews arrive can make a tremendous difference.
We truly appreciate the patience, understanding, and cooperation Rocky River residents show our Street Division, not just during leaf season, but throughout the entire year.
Thank you for supporting our crews and helping us keep Rocky River clean, safe, and beautiful!
Have a wonderful fall season, Rocky River!Rocky River Service Department
