Union Pacific "Big Boy" No. 4014 to Visit Rocky River on July 13

The City of Rocky River is excited to welcome the return of Union Pacific's legendary Big Boy No. 4014, the world's largest operating steam locomotive.

As part of its return trip through Greater Cleveland, Big Boy No. 4014 is scheduled to stop at the former Rocky River Nickel Plate Train Station, located at 19060 Depot Street, on Monday, July 13, from approximately 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Residents and visitors are invited to experience this rare opportunity to see one of America's most iconic steam locomotives. Built during World War II, 25 Big Boy locomotives were constructed to haul heavy freight trains over the steep grades of the Wasatch Mountains between Utah and Wyoming. Today, only eight remain in existence, and No. 4014 is the only one still in operation, making this a truly unique event.

Event Information

  • Portable restrooms will be available on-site for attendees.

  • The Cleveland Division of Water will have its 300-gallon "Water Buggy" on-site providing free drinking water.

  • The forecast calls for warm, sunny weather. Visitors are encouraged to dress appropriately, stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and be prepared for summer conditions.

Parking & Transportation

Parking at the event is extremely limited. There is no dedicated event parking.

Local businesses in the Old Detroit and Beachcliff Market Square areas will remain open during the event, and their parking lots should remain available for customers. To help minimize congestion, the City strongly encourages attendees to:

  • Walk or bike to the event whenever possible.

  • Carpool with family and friends if driving.

  • Plan ahead and allow extra time to reach the viewing area.

Important Information

The locomotive's schedule is subject to change, and Big Boy No. 4014 may arrive ahead of or behind the posted schedule.

For the latest schedule updates and important railroad safety information, please visit the Union Pacific website:

The City of Rocky River looks forward to welcoming residents and visitors for this exciting opportunity to witness a remarkable piece of American railroad history.
